Welcome to Tamil Desktop Productivity Tools



This particular document explains the various tools available with this CD and their installation procedures. Kindly read this document carefully to get started in helping yourself and others to start using computers in Tamil in Windows 2000/XP and Fedora Core 3.



This CD contains:

  1. BharateeyaOO.o – OpenOffice.org 1.1.4 in Tamil

  2. Columba - Email in Tamil

  3. Firefox – Browser interface in Tamil

  4. English Tamil Glossary.

System Requirements

  1. Processor: Intel Celeron, P3 or P4

  2. RAM: Minimum 128 MB , 256 MB Recommended

  3. Hard Disk: Minimum 2 GB ( Installation needs 300MB )

  4. OS: Fedora Core 3 , Windows 2000/XP



Installation process:

Getting your OS ready

  1. Please install Microsoft Windows 2000/XP or Complete Installation of Fedora Core 3 on your machine.

  2. To install Indian Language Support on Windows 2000/XP, read this document.

  3. Fedora Core 3 already comes with Indian Language Support.

  4. Please use GNOME as your default Desktop

  5. Enable Indian Language Input from the main GNOME menu

Install Java

  1. Install Java 1.5 Runtime Environment on your machine from the executables given in CD. Copy the 'fontconfig.properties' files from the Java folder on the CD to lib directory under Java install directory

  2. On Windows copy the Latha font from your Windows System font directory to lib/fonts directory under Java Install directory.

  3. Under Fedora Core 3 copy the GIST-TMOTChanakya Font from the CD to lib/fonts directory under Java Install directory





Install OpenOffice.org

  1. Extract the archive for your operating system from the OpenOffice folder in the CD.

  2. A folder called 'normal' will be created.

  3. Double Click setup.exe on Windows or run setup from command prompt on Linux and follow the instructions.

  4. After successful installation on Fedora Core 3, start the 'spadmin' tool from program directory under OpenOffice.org 1.1.4 Installation. This process is not required for Windows users.

  5. The 'spadmin' too will help you install new fonts for OpenOffice.org Usage.

  6. On Fedora Core 3, start the 'swriter' and go to 'விருப்பங்கள்' menuitem under 'கருவிகள்' menu. This will bring up OpenOffice.org Options Dialog. Find the 'எழுத்துருக்கள்' sub item. Enable 'மாற்று பட்டியை பயன்படுத்துக' checkbox and the add a replacement of 'Andale Sans UI' font with 'GIST-TMOTChanakya' font. Enable this font replacement and UI will look much more cleaner after this change. Please note that 'Andale Sans UI' might not be available in the drop down list and you may have to type it in yourselves. The options dialog should look like this




Install FireFox

  1. Install FireFox for your operating system from FireFox folder in the CD.

  2. Start Firefox and open the file 'BharateeyaOOFireFoxTamilLanguagePack.xpi' through the browser. Install the pack by following the instructions.

  3. The user interface will change to Tamil next time after you restart FireFox.



Install Columba

  1. Extract the archive for your operating system from the Columba folder in the CD.

  2. Run 'run.bat' or 'run.sh' from command prompt and follow instrctions.

  3. Open the General Options Dialog and change the Look and Feel to Metal

  4. Change the user interface language to 'Tamil (India)'.

    Glossary

    The glossary contains the dictionary of terms used in Tamil and what they mean in English.
